Situated on the southern shore of Georgian Bay, the Municipality of Meaford is a fascinating four-season destination that has it all: great live theatre and concerts, fresh local food, unique shopping, nature at your doorstep, a beautiful harbour and so much more! The quaint and charming historic downtown district features Meaford Hall – a restored 330-seat theatre, concert and cinema venue – plus unique boutiques, delicious eateries, and services of all kinds!
Just a few minutes away you’ll find acres of rolling countryside, charming historic villages, sandy beaches and unspoiled natural areas! There’s so much to see and do in Meaford that I’ve decided to make it a cycling weekend! With acres of rolling countryside and trails heading off in every direction, Meaford is the
perfect headquarters for your cycling adventure! You can rent a bicycle or bring your own, and you’ll find so much to see within easy cycling distance. Enjoy cycling along quiet country roads, secluded trails, the breathtaking harbourfront, and through the downtown core lined with shops and restaurants.
Let’s make a start bright and early at Ride on Bikes for a guided cycling tour! They have 4 different tour routes, great for all abilities! Their Sunrise Tour starts at their location at 14 Trowbridge Street in Meaford at 6 am. Take in the sunrise, then allow Meaford to show you all her splendour as you travel country roads, the harbourfront and some of the best places for stopping and taking in the spectacular views! (If you don’t want to join the cycling party, you could always make your way to 163 Edwin Street in Meaford and spend a couple of hours at Big Head River Conservation Area, hiking and fishing the Trout Hollow Trail. Maybe before you start, or after you’ve finished, you’re only a few steps away from Beautiful Joe Park. This 8.5 acre park is the actual resting place of Beautiful Joe, a dog who suffered unspeakable torture at the hands of a cruel master before being rescued, cared for and loved by a compassionate family. Today, the park
commemorates service dogs and their K9 officers.) Another cycling option is about 23 kilometers away, so you hardy cyclists may want to bike there, or you may just want to drive there, to Coffin Ridge Vineyard and Winery, at 599448 Concession 2 North in Annan. The wines made here come from Grey County grapes! You can also enjoy a vintner’s plate as a light snack, consisting of local artisanal breads, charcuterie and cheeses! Whenever you’re ready for more substantial fare, you can’t go wrong at The Leeky Canoe at 94 North Sykes Street in Meaford! Or try out Andrew’s Roots at 82 North Sykes Street in Meaford, for a variety of meat, fish and game dishes! Another popular place for wild game lovers, as well as traditional fare lovers, is Ted’s Range Road Diner, at Grey Road 112, Meaford. After dinner, why not see what’s playing at Meaford Hall (12 Nelson Street East, Meaford)? This century building is home to any variety of concerts, theatre productions, film events and more!
Whew! After a day of outdoor adventures and a tummy full of great food, it’s back to our hotel for a wonderful night’s sleep! For a romantic getaway in an award-winning 5-star bed and breakfast, check in at Irish Mountain Bed and Breakfast on Grey Road 112, Meaford. Or, for a clean and comfy night for the whole family, try out the Meaford Inn at 126 Sykes Street North, in Meaford! Another good choice for staying in Meaford is the Hilltop Motel at 300 Sykes Street South, in Meaford! All right! For tomorrow, there are more activities for both cyclists and non-cyclists alike! For you cyclists, it’s back to Ride on Bikes! Remember I mentioned that there were 4 tours? Well we only took 1 today, so there are 3 more to choose from! For the walkers and hikers in the group, check out Hibou Conservation Area, at County Road 15 outside of Owen Sound. Enjoy the picnic areas, the 2 sandy beaches and the great opportunities for seeing wildlife!
Or head over to Bognor Marsh at 104277 Grey County Road 18 in Bognor! At Bognor Marsh you will find 11.9 km of trails, an education shelter, boardwalks with interpretive signs, a viewing tower, access to the Bruce Trail and washroom facilities! A multi-use area, Bognor Marsh is visited by school classes, hikers, naturalists and birders! What a fun weekend! You may have to come back to enjoy more activities such as horseback riding tours and boat tours! And, in the winter, snowmobiling and snowshoeing and skiing! It will take a lot of trips back to see and do everything there is to see and do! You should probably buy a house here! I know a great Realtor!
